This article explains the direct influence a pregnant woman’s choices and environment have in shaping the development of their child, using epigenetic and neuroscience data as support. Furthermore, the article examines the experiences of those who feel have been failed by the healthcare system. Despite the recommendations to limit the use of surgical incision during childbirth from the WHO and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the province of Quebec lead Canada for the use of episiotomies (24.1%), and epidural administrations (72.7%). More vulnerable populations experience these effects in much more pronounced ways, and may not be informed of their medical choices. The medical establishment must examine its role in reducing health risks for babies and the mothers. The paper concludes that there must be a shift in the culture of maternity care, one which prioritizes and advocates for the dignity of the mother.
